2003 Dental Education Summit
On August 21-23, 2003 the New Mexico Dental Association in partnership with the University of New Mexico, TVI Workforce Training Center, New Mexico Health Policy Commission, New Mexico Commission on Higher Education and Delta Dental Plan held a Dental Education Summit to asses the states needs, present and future, in the way of dental health professionals. The first day of the summit was sponsored by UNM and was in the form of a Dental Advisory panel. On the 22 & 23rd the open Summit was held at TVI Workforce Training Center.

Dr. L. Jackson Brown, Associate Executive Director of the American Dental Association opened and ended the second day of the Summit with a presentation on Issues and Trends in the Dental Workforce and one on Trends in the Dental Team Workforce. Dr. Jim Cole, immediate past president, AADE gave a presentation on Dental Licensing Primer and Forecast. The unabridged version of his article can be obtained from FACD.

On the 22nd and 23rd the Dental Education Summit was held at TVI's Workforce Training Center. The space was donated by TVI for the purpose of the Summit.
Dr. Frank Ayers, Associate Dean, Creighton University; Dr. Michael Reed, Dean, UMKC; Dr. Randy Kluender, Associate Dean, Univ. of Colorado; Dr. Jack Long, Associate Dean, Baylor College of Dentistry lead a Panel Discussion on Dental Education.
Demetra Logothetis, RDH , Director, UNM Dental Programs; Paula Spaight, RDH, Director, San Juan College Dental Programs; Dr. Frank Renz, Executive Director, NM Association Community Colleges; Melanie Upshaw, Director TVI Dental Assisting Program led a Panel Discussion on Dental team Education.

Dr. Susan Jancar, immediate past president, JCODA, gave a Dental Accreditation Primer and Forecast (see Minutes).
Dr. Thomas Schripsema, NMDA Chairperson, Council on Governmental Affairs, presents a plaque to Senator Jeff Bingaman in appreciation of his dedication to dental healthcare. Dr. Schripsema was instrumental in organizing the Summit.
Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Dean, University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Dr. Richard J. Simonsen, Arizona School of Health Sciences; Dr. Patricio Larragoite, NM Health Policy Commission; Dr. Frank Catalanotto, Former Dean of University of Florida, President-elect of ADEA added to the Panel on Dental Education with Considerations of Alternatives and Innovations in Dental Education.
New Mexico Senator Dede Feldman gave a short presentation on the state of dentalhealthcare in New Mexico and introduced Senator Bingaman.
